Project Description

The Cates Utility Plant improvements include a new, 2,000 ton chiller, 2,000 ton cooling tower, two (2) new 5.5 MW combustion turbine generators (CTG), two (2) heat recovery steam generators (HRSG), two (2) fuel gas generators, and associated ancillary equipment. Demolition of the existing 1,600 ton chilled water plant will be necessary to make way for the new addition that will house the HRSG’s.

The Yarborough Plant Renovations include demolition of two (2) 100,000 pph Boilers, structural modifications, façade restoration, installation of two (2) new 100,000 pph boilers, and rehabilitation of one (1) 100,000 ph boiler.

The HRSG’s, CTG’s, and packaged boilers at both plants will be duel fuel operating modes. All work is being coordinated with the season campus heating and cooling loads. Temporary plants for chilled water and steam will be required at various phases of the project.
This project is the largest energy performance contract by the State of North Carolina, at a cost of $25.3 million and encompassing 35,000 square feet of space.
